I have put over 3000 rounds through the Sig now and decided it was time for a good cleaning so today I got brave and completely stripped the fire control unit. Following the directions posted by Thrak on the Sigforum it was really pretty easy.
It was surprisingly clean but I gave each part a good soaking and closely examined everything for damage, didn't see any problems.

While I had it apart I polished the trigger and the backside of the hammer.

Update: I finally got around to adding pics to my website along with a description of each step for disassembling and reassembling the FCU.

Man, that looks good!
Two questions: What's your solvent of choice?
And did you have a hard time getting the mainsprings back into the hammer?
I have "detail stripped" mine except for the hammer assembly. I just haven't been brave enough to go that far yet.

The polished hammer and trigger are killer!

I have been using Hoppes No. 9. It's cheap and does a good job, picked up a quart of it the other day for 12 bucks.

I was worried about the mainsprings too but it was very easy. I just took a wooden dowel and tapered the end of it so it was just slightly bigger than the large spring, then I sanded one side of the taper flap which gave room for the pin to slide over the springs. It work great and a lot cheaper than ordering some special tool like the other guys have been doing. BigGrin

Shane, did you polish any of the engagement surfaces on the trigger or trigger bar? Just curious of any of your work had an effect on trigger pull.

Will the shine on the rear hammer area create a blind spot in certain lighting conditions? Isn't that area better being dull?

Nope, I just polished the sides and back. The trigger is very smooth and I didn't want to mess anything up.

Good question, I hadn't thought about that. Guess it could if the sun was down low and directly behind ya.

Nope, should be the same.

i noticed what looks like to be some pitting of some sort while cleaning my pistol tonite, i was wondering if anyone has seen anything similar, excuse the pictures i was having a hard time getting them into focus.

i was using some stuff called kleenbore formula 3 from a cleaning kit. now i'm using hoppe's # 9. i'm pretty sure its not the cleaning product.
