Our republic would work that way, too, if people 1) actually got involved in the political process and 2) held their politicians COMPLETELY accountable, by force if necessary as provided for in the 2nd Amendment. The difference between a democracy and our republic is that a true democracy is basically mob rule where the majority decides everything. A republic is run by a majority too, but with the exception that there is a constitution in place to protect the rights of all the people no matter which side currently enjoys the majority vote. So, you can't just start committing genocide or installing state religions or imprisoning people for speaking their minds, etc. At least, theoretically, as long as the government is kept under control by the people. That is the duty of all Americans, to hold the government accountable. By the ballot box and soap box preferably, but if those fail then the cartridge box will have to do. Our children and future generations are worth it.
