Just took a carry class and the base shooting was 7 yards. How far back does everyone shoot? |

I start at 7 yards. I do mot of my shooting at that distance. I shoot a less amount of my range time at 15 yrds and 25 yrds. I tend to shoot at a timed rate. Not slow fire and not rapid fire.

For personal defence the conventional wisdom is 3-7 yrds (21ft) approx. Studies have shown that this is the distance the majority of deadly force engagements take place. The thing to keep in mind is you'll have to defend in court the distance you applyed deadly force. Kinda hard to convince a jury that you just had to kill someone who was 20yrds ( 60 ft) away instead of trying to evade or break contact. Which alot of States require you to attempt. And simply saying " I was in FEAR for my life" just ain't gonna cut it.
The 4 things you have to prove in court is Opportunity, Jeapardy, Ability & Preclusion of the individual attacking you.
Goes back to that mantra of the Military : " Train the way you'll fight"
Real world Personal Defence shooting ( as real as you can make it without someone shooting back ) is about the only way I pratice anymore since giving up hunting. |

I'm in full agreement with you Grumpy. There is definitely a need to be able to hit your target distances beyond 20 yrds, but then we get into the need for a pistol or a rifle. The threat posed by a target at that range can be open to interpretation. Here in California, you would have a hard time justifying a threat at that distance. I do enjoy long range shooting, but real world is close in and fast. More shooters need to practice their draw and getting on target quickly. IDPA has helped me immensely in that regard. I would recommend it to all CCW's.
