I've been wanting to finish off the AR in my safe in 6.5 Grendel for over a year but have been focused on upgrading my other ARs.
FINALLY, I bit the bullet & ordered a barrel & BCG in 6.5 to go on my Colt Competition Upper & lower.
Still need a gas block & tube as well as deciding on a rail and scope but then it'll be done.
Anyone else getting into this chambering??
I'm really enjoying the research, parts shopping and ammo for this caliber build.

Appears to be deader than Nixon around here ...

At any rate, I'm awaiting delivery of the remaining parts (minus optics ) to get this wrapped up.
At least the initial build.
Anyone have experience with Matrix Arms rails ?
JoeBobs had a great sale on their stuff.

I hadn't heard of the Grendel Grump, but will be putting it in the google machine soon. I have been looking at precision rifles in 6.5 creedmoor because that round sparked my interest. I have 2 stripped lowers that would be interesting to do in an "odd" chambering.

Well the 6.5 Grendel can be thought of as the 6.5 Creedmore "Short".
The 6.5 Creedmore is a chambering for the AR10 (308) receiver.
While the 6.5 Grendel is an AR15 chambering.
I'm really impressed that the Grendel stay supersonic at 1,000yrds (20"-24" barrels).
I also love the innovation in ammunition we've seen as companies vie for the most potent & accurate round that will fit in the magwell of the standard AR.
The fact that you can get range ammo in 6.5 Grendel for .40¢-.43¢ per round is also nice.
It's what pushed me over the edge and convinced me to build one.
I have ARs chambered .22lr , 223WYLDE, 5.56, .300blackout & now 6.5 Grendel.
Next will be an AR pistol 9mm (Colt mag - not the Glock mags)

Here's an article on both the Grendel & Creedmore

Sad part is I learned more in that post Grump than all of my google fu has yielded! Blushing Laugh

I think you just changed my mind. Will definitely read the article you posted. Also seems like with the current market it wouldn't be a bad idea to "buy" standard 5.56 AR's and build everything else since the 5.56 rifles are falling off the shelves these days.

Have you tried 5.45x39? If you have an AK74, you can get an S&W upper and modify some Magpul followers to run 27 rounds in any STANAG 5.56 magazine.

That is the only odd AR caliber for me. I do have Quarter Circle 10 lowers with .357 SIG and .40 S&W uppers using Glock magazines. Also a .300 Blk AR pistol that I go back and forth with 12 gauge shotguns as to which would be a better home defense weapon. I doubt I will build another AR in 5.56 and if distance is what I am looking for, I can always pick up another barrel for my Savage long action.

I don't know what I would do with it but this looks interesting: https://fightlite.com/co...e-raider-pistol-300-blk

The .300 Blk has kept me from investing in 7.62x39. Just another set of magazines I don't need to stockpile.

Parts are still arriving but I figured I'd piece something together.
Not the mount , scope, muzzle devise or stock I plan to use but it gives me something to look at while shopping for parts.
I realize I have way too many extra parts laying around...

* most of my extras are slated for Ceramic Coating practice.

Here's the barrel & BCG with type II bolt (important)

Impact Weaponry Keymod sling stud & bipod mounted.
Sadly it looks like it's gonna be a minute before the weather cooperates enough for me to get out and heat this thing up.
Until then I'll be taking pictures.

Looks amazing Grump! What length gas system did you use? I'm just curious to get some opinions on gas length for my next buy/build. I have a carbine length now, but think I want to go rifle length next time.

This is a 20" barrel with a rifle length gas system.
15" rail to cover the gas block

That's what I figured with the 20" barrel, but just wanted to ask. I am not a rifle shooter to say the least, but I do want to gain some skill shooting at distance (100-500 yards) just to have a measurable goal to go along with the sheer fun of shooting. Do you think a rifle length system would be a good place to start? A little back story, I don't shoot my carbine length, 16" barrel worth a crap at 50 yards..Blushing. My best so far, from bench rest, is about a 15 round, 5-in group with irons.

Well, a lot comes into play.
Inherent quality & accuracy of the barrel ($$$) .
Quality hunting or match ammunition has much better consistency & accuracy potential than bulk ammo.
A Target trigger or an enhanced trigger of some kind greatly improves overall accuracy potential as well.
Taking an inexpensive AR, with a basic barrel, heavy & gritty stock trigger, inexpensive bulk ammo and try to shoot MOA or Sub-MOA is just not realistic.

Then add in the quality of the irons & any vision issues an individual may have and it can be very discouraging.
Nothing I'm sure you didn't already know.

Even a 1-4x24 on your 16" with some JP enhanced reliability springs would help greatly.
I saw this deal and about jumped outta my skin.
The mount is usually $120 & the scope is normally $240
I have one on one of my ARs
First Focal Zplane scopes are great !
The JP springs are $10-12 on Brownells

Thanks for the advice Grump! I hadn't thought about the ammo and barrel affects on accuracy until you reminded me. I need to do way more homework!

Sent the 3-12x back to Brownells & the picked up a 4.5-18x along with a taller 1.5" cantilevered mount.
The eye relief & cheek weld is much better.
This will do for now.

Scope on top is the 3-12x
Bottom is the 4.5-18x
