Is there that big of a difference to be concern with reliability?

You should be fine with either. The very early gen1's had some issues that were ironed out in later gen1's and the corrections were carried over to the gen2's. If you don't want to risk getting one of the troubled gen1 guns, go gen2 and you will be guaranteed not to get one. The mags purchased from Sig come with both base plates for now and the slides, barrels and recoil springs are interchangeable between the two gens...hope this helps. Good luck!
