I completely agree. I absolutely love doing my own work and hate when I can't.

I can't begin to describe the satisfaction I get, when I have one of my guns down to bare metal/frame/etc do my own polishing/trigger job/etc and reassembling.

I have taken the FCU completely down and back together, no problem at all.

I am stuck on the firing pin pin.

I cannot figure out what you could have used to get that pin out.

I have a 1/32 punch that looks and feels too big and have not wanted to do any damage with. That's the smallest punch I have (and in fact seen) and smallest drill bit I have.

Can you (or anyone else) show me what and how you used?

The firing pin pin? Do you mean that first roll pin which begins the disassembly procedure?

Yeah, I saw that tool and thats pretty steep price. Especially with the other one not needed at all... a 3/32 punch held the springs down perfectly for the pin to start its way in.

GrumpyBiker didn't use it and even said a drill bit could be used.

So I want to know what size he used and where he found it etc

Don't be. It's a good resource. Especially the spare parts kit for later on.

And it would be a great if I had the 25 plus shipping to spend on a specialty item like that.

But it is a whole box of ammo or another 25 towards this 1911 I have been coveting Love

Ok all done.

Made my own "punch"

Took a 78cent comedone extractor that daughter never used, blunted the sharp point,

knocked the pin until the taper didn't let it go any further, marked where that was, and filed about 3/4 inch above that down to that marked thickness.

Then pin came right out.

Cost: 78 cents and 10 minutes with a file Cool

A set of roll pin punches are pretty cheap and will keep you from damaging the pin.
You're correct, I didn't use one in the photos.
I was lazy & didn't want to stop to go into my safe where I'd left it & I thought folks would be attempting this without any real gunsmithing tools.
Sorry, I hadn't checked in here for a little bit.
I've been budding ARs for folks lately.

Hi, Grumpy.

The problem with the punches was that so little of the pin was exposed on the slide underside, that I didn't have anything small enough.

No punch I had came near.

That is why I was wanting to know what you used.

Then I MacGyvered up a punch.

BTW, what did you use? and what size?

I made a punch from a broken bit, it's 2.35mm in diameter, I beveled the side to fit through the hole better.

I went ahead and made one myself , also made a hammer spring tool...



facial tool that I filed and dulled : 78 cents

aluminum crossbow pistol bolt filed and wrapped with skateboard grip tape : 15 cents

time : 5 HOURS LOL

I know crazy spending that long MacGyvering something readyably obtained for $20, but I gotta tell ya, I would have gladly spent 12+ hours making it myself Cool

Much needed post. I have two slides I'm upgrading to night sights. Obviously, you need to know this procedure to do that.
